Experimental evidence root‐associated microbes mediate seagrass response to environmental stress

چکیده
Below-ground microbiota play an important role in mediating environmental conditions with consequences for plant performance. Micro-organisms involved plant–soil interactions may be associated roots or bulk soil; however, the relative influence of these below-ground microbial assemblages on performance is poorly known, particularly marine plants. We separately manipulated root and sediment seagrass Zostera muelleri a fully factorial experiment to determine how determined response (e.g. growth) nutrient enrichment, major stressor systems. Under ambient conditions, growth was maintained regardless assemblage disruption. high stress, seagrasses disrupted had reduced growth, whereas intact microbiota. Disruption bulk-sediment did not affect growth. Levels of glutathione (GSH) in tumour tissue may be important in determining the clinical response to certain anticancer agents. Recent reports have suggested that D,L-buthionine-S,R-sulphoximine (BSO), a specific inhibitor of GSH synthesis, may be used to deplete tumour cell GSH and thus increase the therapeutic ratio of these agents. We have previously shown that 1-naphthol is a potential ant...
متن کاملExperimental evidence of reduced particle resuspension within a seagrass (
Dried leaf fragments of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica were used as tracer particles to test if seagrass leaf canopies reduce particle resuspension. Half Petri dishes containing a known mass of tracer particles were deployed for 24 h, five times during the summer period inside a 15-m deep P. oceanica meadow and on an adjacent sandy bottom devoid of vegetation. The loss of tracer ...

Evolution depends on the manner in which genetic variation is translated into new phenotypes. There has been much debate about whether organisms might have specific mechanisms for "evolvability," which would generate heritable phenotypic variation with adaptive value and could act to enhance the rate of evolution. Capacitor systems, which allow the accumulation of cryptic genetic variation and ...

متن کاملShelterin components mediate genome reorganization in response to replication stress.
The dynamic nature of genome organization impacts critical nuclear functions including the regulation of gene expression, replication, and DNA damage repair. Despite significant progress, the mechanisms responsible for reorganization of the genome in response to cellular stress, such as aberrant DNA replication, are poorly understood. Here, we show that fission yeast cells carrying a mutation i...
